Common Dental Issues

Toothache

Toothache is always uncomfortable. While very mild toothaches may go away after a day or so, painful or prolonged toothaches should always be taken seriously.

You’ve made a dentist appointment, and it can’t come soon enough. Meanwhile, it can help to rinse your mouth with warm water, floss to remove food caught between teeth, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever. If you notice swelling or pus around the tooth, or if you have a fever, that could be a sign that you have an abscess, a more severe problem. See your dentist as soon as possible. You may need antibiotics as well as other treatments.

If you’re experiencing a toothache, it could be more than just a painful nuisance. A toothache is generally a symptom of inflammation in the tooth most commonly caused by a cavity. However, pain can also be a symptom of gum disease or infection.

  • Painful, swollen gums
